Get Out of Town: Costa Rica

We do life with some seriously cool people. We love escaping our daily routines with them. Which is why we celebrated my work visa coming into full effect by wrangling six of our most treasured to explore the Nicoya coast of Costa Rica with us.

Travel logistics in Costa Rica can take some orchestrating. We flew into San Jose, then eventually set off on a 3.5 hour journey to Tambor, our home base for the nine days. To reach the coast from San Jose you drive to the Puntarenas ferry then hop aboard for a beautiful, breath taking journey to Paquera. The views of the Costa coastline are exceptional throughout the entire 90 minute journey. From the ferry dock at Paquera it is about a twenty minute drive, depending on traffic, until you arrive in Tambor. Driving lets you see a lot of country and its lush landscape. Either drive yourself or book a private shuttle though Grayline. But if you’re going solo, make sure you check the ferry schedules because they don’t operate every hour.

We switched things up on our way back to San Jose and nabbed a small charter through Sansa. It was a harrowing but incredible twenty-five minute flight. Just give yourself ample room to make your connection in San Jose as these small inter-country flights are often grounded or delayed due to weather (ours was).

We loved all of Costa Rica, and Tambor was the perfect FullSizeRenderbase. It is a touch out of the way, which is what we loved most. It’s a sparely populated part of the coast making for a quiet, private and beautiful retreat.  When you waded out into the water there were no resorts within eye shot, instead mountains of lush jungle surrounded the coastline in every direction. The seclusion made for stunning morning runs along the beach as the mist lifted of the hills.

Don’t stay in one spot. Make sure you adventure out and explore.  It is a beautiful country, that we only saw a small corner of.  But if you find yourself in the southern region of the Nicoya Coast jump off the Montezuma Falls, zip-line through the jungle and take some time exploring Montezuma (easily my favourite part of the trip). Ogle some monkeys, macaws and butterflies, and try all the fresh fruit. I will be dreaming of pineapples, papayas (with lime) and mangoes all winter. There are so many other nooks of this great wide world I am earning to explore, but even so I would head back to Costa in a heartbeat.
